About The Book
History Of Disease
Serge R. Pospelov, born in the USSR, reflects on a tumultuous journey from school years to the final days in Russia in his book “HISTORY OF DISEASE: Life, Service, and Escape from the Russian Army.” His narrative encompasses the sarcastic nuances of life in the USSR and the Russian Army, detailing the struggles, survival, and disappointments during the tumult of the 1990s. Volume 2 contains memoir about his attempts to leave the country, leading to imprisonment under suspicion of espionage. Released without trial, he lived under the constant surveillance of the FSB until a daring escape took him from Russia to Belarus, then Poland, and ultimately to Canada.
About Me
Serge R. Pospelov
I was born in USSR, in the southern city of Astrakhan, what stands in between Black Steppe and Rym Sands in a delta of Volga River. Childhood and youth passed relatively trouble free under the aegis of omnipresent Communist vigil and as promised -to-be future staunch Marxist I successfully passed through all stages of communist youth organizations and upon graduation of high school entered Penza Higher Artillery Engineering school for five-year university program. Upon graduation and promotion to the first officer rank I began my service in artillery technical military unit. Four years after I entered St. Petersburg Artillery Academy.
With wider horizons, experience and knowledge obtained in Academy and previous military service, has come a realization about vague future perspectives without outside help and support. By that time matured a new, until then unknown idea, to move out of Russia which was running towards abyss. I tried several amateurish and unsuccessful attempts initially to join Azerbaijani Army, then to immigrate to Norway and even to Iraq. All attempts miserably failed until I tried slowly but surely, my luck with Canada. My case progressed slowly and failing to protect my underground immigration movements I attracted the attention of FSB suspecting me of espionage, for some reason, pro domo sua USA. Then followed my detainment, then arrest when as “a guest of the state” I began my tour from preliminary detainment jail to the infamous Investigation Jail No.1 in Ekaterinburg.
Eventually my case fell apart and having been released from the jail I was allowed to continue my service in Army unofficially branded as an American spy. The counterintelligence department in the region where I was transferred to without any ado expressed unhidden interest to my person and put me again under surveillance. The situation was getting hot and unpleasant. New arrest was imminent, while at that time I got my Canadian immigration visa and did everything I could to lull FSB vigilance and at the very last moment escaped from Russia to Belarus, then to Poland where from I reached Canada. This is the end of the book.
Over time came an understanding that some moments of my biography might deserve some attention, consideration and maybe, a lenient smile. Then I tried to re-live my life a second time
by putting old memories on paper. Why not? So, that is how this opus was born, although without excessive labor pains but not without the sufficient help of good claret.
